The COA STAR Curriculum
Our teaching philosophy is to continuously develop new and innovative programs bringing every child the most current and relevant curriculum to date. We realize the importance of being accountable to the children we serve which is reflected in our efforts...by our dedication, innovation, and ability to prepare young children for higher learning.
Our curriculum works in the framework of a structured environment yet within that structure children make choices and teachers support the learning created by those choices. This structure allows children to develop a sense of security and examination, while experimenting with ideas.
Through exploration and discovery each child receives ample opportunity to develop his or her natural curiosity and creativity. With the guidance of caring teachers our children cultivate each and every moment for lasting understanding. This is the key to providing educational programs that develop your child's discoveries into a lifelong love of learning and academic success.
COA Approach to Learning - Active Learning the Central Element
The HighScope influenced curriculum is an overall approach to learning with the emphasis on Active Learning. Active learning quite simply means children have hands-on experiences with people, objects, events and ideas. Children make choices according to their interests and teachers support these choices. Knowledge is constructed through interactions with the world and the people around them. Children take the first step by making choices and following through on their plans and decisions. Using the Plan, Do, Review structure; teachers offer physical, emotional and academic support in an active environment and use open-ended questions to expand thinking and create an environment that is both exciting and secure. The process focuses on creative problem solving and strong verbal communication.
The evidence becomes clear as we see children problem solve through experiences and use higher-level thought processing such as critical thinking skills. At COA, we believe in respecting the dignity and worth of every individual and value every child as unique.
